June 1st 2002 brought along big changes for foreigners wanting to live and work in Switzerland. The Treaty on the Free Movement of Persons between Switzerland and the European Union was one of seven treaties coming into force on this date--and the one that had most publicity in the Swiss media. People from EU-countries will flood Switzerland, working for far less money than a Swiss employee, they will draw heavily on the Swiss social security system and generally take away lots of jobs from the Swiss--such worries could not only be heard from the right wing parties in Switzerland hut also from the unions that were not overly pleased at file opening of the Swiss employment ...
