GATEWAY -- The scenery is spectacular, deep red canyons cut by West Creek and the Dolores River. Echoes of long-ago cattle drives and the bustle of miners seem to sound in the canyons.
Economically, it's a place time forgot.
Roughly 150 people scratch out a living working odd jobs, struggling to keep cattle operations in business or commuting 55 miles to Grand Junction over narrow, twisting Colorado 141.
No cell phone in the world works here. Its lone cafe is closed again. There's no gas pump.
