Sep. 8--MIDLAND, Texas -- Low unemployment, high energy prices and new job creation through economic diversification are driving the recent expansion of the retail sector in Midland, community leaders there say.
Retail behemoth Wal-Mart Stores leads the list of national chains planning to open new stores in Midland later this year or in 2005.
Also, the outer walls of the 56,000-square-foot Academy Sports and Outdoors are up. A block south, discount retailer Kohl's is preparing to pour the foundation of its first store in the area. Further south, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart has purchased a large tract of land at Interstate 20 and ...
