Sep. 9--Boone County officials are worried about the budget effect of Medical Examiner Valerie Rao's decision to perform more autopsies than her predecessor.
Rao assumed her post on March 1 after the Boone County Commission appointed her. She succeeded Jay Dix, who died of cancer in November 2002.
Jo Fountain, former chief death investigator, told the county commission yesterday that Rao has started to autopsy the bodies of all suicide and traffic accident victims. That policy could triple the annual volume of autopsies, she said.
