WHEN it comes to seeing exotic animals on holiday, I'm a sceptic. On Lundy Island I waited in vain for the puffins and basking sharks, though the place is famous for both, and my one whale-watching expedition went to the brink of cold and wet disappointment before the big fellow finally showed up.

So the promise of watching giant sea turtles laying eggs on an Indian Ocean beach by night, a la David Attenborough, was one I treated with caution. As we drove there after dinner, bought our permits (about [pounds sterling]1 a head) and marched across the sand by moonlight, I was thinking more about wild goose chases than wild sealife.
