DEEP in the primeval forest, hard by the old Soviet border-one of the guides told us to wait on the path while he went ahead into the trees on a recce. We waited, some fingering binoculars, some swatting mosquitoes, all of us excited. The guide was gone for only a few minutes but it seemed longer before he returned and beckoned us to follow him quietly into the trees.
And then we saw it. Twenty yards away, perched on a branch, was a great grey owl. For five minutes we ogled him and he ignored us before moving on, a shadow flying on a 5ft wingspan. I knew I was absolutely elated by the sight but the question was: why?
