Sep. 13--OSAKA, Japan -- More and more manufacturing firms are turning to contract manufacturers to make or put together their products in a bid to cut labor costs.

Contract manufacturers can dispatch workers to the factories of various companies. They can work in a variety of areas, such as providing engineering services, processing orders and distributing or assembling products.

These firms first entered the market in the late 1970s and saw a surge in business in the late 1990s amid the recession.

Contract workers differ from temporary workers in that outsourcing manufacturers cannot instruct or supervise them directly.
