Outlook
The worldwide ammonia supply-demand balance has strengthened during the past few years, due to a shutdown of capacity between 2000 mad 2003, says SRI Consulting (Menlo Park, CA). Operating rates averaged 90% last year. Margins for U.S. producers remain under pressure, however, because of persistently high natural gas prices, analysts say. Mississippi Chemical, Koch Nitrogen, and PotashCorp have all idled ammonia capacity because of poor margins, and are unlikely to restart, analysts say.
