At first glance_or second or third, for that matter_C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud, towering intellects of the 20th century, seem an odd couple.
Lewis, beloved author of such children's favorites as The Chronicles of Narnia, was an eloquent, committed Christian thinker. Freud, the pioneering psychoanalyst, was a secular Jew and an equally committed atheist.
In life, the two men never met, but 30 years ago a Harvard professor came to believe that they essentially were talking to each other. Armand Nicholi was struck by the parallelism of their writings.
