Hungarian pastry chef Attila Farkas, who some argue is the finest in the area, has a one-word answer when asked how he happened to settle in Cleveland: "Stalin.''
Interesting that nearly 70 years later, one word also can be used to describe how the pastry shop he and his father founded in Cleveland grew beyond its one-store customer base: "Heinen's.''
The road from Stalin to Heinen's was paved with hard work, plus the artistry and dedication it took to build a brand and a following. And don't forget about a well-crafted succession plan - from father to son to well-trained apprentice.
