Sep. 15--Jim Brandt starts his shift shortly after sunrise -- when mosquitoes might still be on the prowl and sniffing out one final snack before their daytime siestas.
Brandt, along with a half dozen other gardeners, tend plants at the sprawling Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens in north Claremont. Brandt and others working at the 86-acre gardens wear long-sleeved shirts, and some also use insect repellent.
"If anyone would get bitten, it would be us," Brandt said.
The gardens can be buggy at times, but Brandt said he has yet to see ...
