When presidential advisers calculate their odds in swing state Oregon, Lane County figures as an important variable.
It's a ready source of campaign cash for Republicans and a must-win electorate for Democrats, who usually have to overcome losses in 28 of Oregon's 36 counties to prevail in statewide elections.
"We're the margin of success," said Jim Edmunson, chairman of the Democratic Party of Oregon and a Eugene resident. "Lane County swings the balance. We're pivotal."
