IN A DIARY ENTRY from March 1887, approximately a year before her death, the Swedish writer Victoria Benedictsson wrote that: "Mitt eget lif ar blott en kar bild, att slutas i en medaljong, mitt arbete ar ett tafvelgalleri, art skankas at min samtid" (3:268) (1) [My own life is but a dear image, to be enclosed in a medallion; my work is a picture gallery, to be given to my contemporaries]. With this statement, she tried to draw a line between her diary and her published fiction as well as between her life and her work.
