By year's end, three of the nation's largest airlines may be operating under bankruptcy protection. United Airlines is in bankruptcy; US Airways has signaled it may file for bankruptcy this fall, and Delta Airlines has been struggling to survive the industry upheaval since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Three simultaneous airline bankruptcies are not unheard of. In 1992, Continental, TWA and America West Airlines were all in Chapter 11, but the industry was significantly stronger, and those carriers affected 19% of the country's airline operations. This new triple hit could affect 42% of all flights.
