Consultants and salespeople working in the area of Internet security no longer face incredulous stares when talking about combating threats to computer networks.

The evidence of computer systems under siege from viruses, worms and hackers, resulting in countless lost hours of productivity, has been well documented in recent years.

Businesses that have either experienced disruptions or saw how network failures affected others are increasing their security measures, said Matt Mollure, chief network engineer for Qnexion, a San Diego-based firm that manages and filters e-mails for companies.
