Patellofemoral subluxation is one of the most common knee problems seen in the orthopedist's office. The diagnosis can usually be made by history and physical examination. It is important to recognize that all patients with patellofemoral subluxation/dislocation do not have all the symptoms or signs that are classic to this problem. The term "anterior knee pain" has crept into the literature. I prefer not to use this term and think a specific diagnosis should be made relevant to the patella, such as a patellar tendonitis, quadriceps tendonitis, inflammation of the lateral retinaculum, or chondromalacia.
