New Water-Treatment Plant Begins Operation in Gloucester County, Va.

Sep. 4--GLOUCESTER, Va.--Gloucester County has a new water treatment plant, and its residents shouldn't have to worry about running out of drinking water for decades to come.

Not like they did in the Ice Storm of 1998 or when Hurricane Floyd brushed Gloucester the following year, Public Utilities Director Larry Dame told the Board of Supervisors in a tour of the new plant Tuesday.

The new plant uses a technology called "reverse osmosis," which purifies water by forcing it through special membranes. Drawing from two 1,500-foot-deep wells, the plant can turn out 2 million gallons of drinkable water daily.
