Aug. 13--Thanks to the home-refinancing boom, consumers have more money to spend, and Orange County retailers have benefited. As a result, retailers are opening stores or expanding.
Just 5.9 percent of the 74 million square feet of Orange County retail space surveyed was empty in the second quarter, according to a report by CB Richard Ellis. That dropped from 6.5 percent a year ago. Landlords were able to ask $1.88 per square foot on average in the second quarter, 10 cents more than a year ago. The survey covers more than 75 percent of all retail space in Orange County.
