Aug. 20--Forty-five new human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in South Dakota Tuesday, bringing the 2003 total to 142 cases in the state.
The South Dakota Department of Health is urging residents to not be complacent as the disease continues to spread. People should take all precautions to avoid contracting the mosquito-borne virus.
In 2002 South Dakota had 37 cases of WNV in humans, with no fatalities. So far, no deaths have been linked to the virus this year in the state.
The virus is present in not only wetter east river areas, but also in the state's drought-stricken western counties.
