Jul. 9--Connecticut's aggressive effort to develop better readers among elementary school children got a boost Tuesday with the announcement of a $42.5 million federal grant for reading instruction.
The six-year grant, part of President Bush's No Child Left Behind Act, will pay for teacher training, remedial classes and model teaching programs in eligible public schools.
"Yes, this is significant," said Tom Murphy, a spokesman for the state Department of Education. "It's going to buy us a lot of things. ... We know there are areas that need that extra focus."
