After developing nations sink the Cancun trade talks, the U.S. boosts bilateral deals
The collapse of global trade talks last month in Cancun, Mexico, delays any negotiated cuts in U.S. farm subsidies. Even if the talks are revived later, the trade round is unlikely to be completed by a January 2005 deadline set when the negotiations were launched two years ago.
"On domestic subsidies, we were willing to make significant cuts," said U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick at a news conference after the break up of World Trade Organization (WTO) talks among 148 nations.
