Albany -- The Democratic speaker of the state Assembly accused Republican Gov. George Pataki of persuading three Democratic legislators not to show up for Monday's planned override votes of vetoes Pataki made to the state budget.
Silver had expected to have at least 100 votes, or a two-thirds majority, necessary in the 150-seat Assembly to override the vetoes to the budget largely formulated by the state Legislature. But he conceded late Monday afternoon that the three absences on his side of the aisle had reduced the number of Democratic votes he could count on to 99.
