Apr. 19--The parent company of Cricket Communications Inc. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to reorganize and restructure its debt.

Cricket customers in the Valley received cards in the mail this week from Cricket assuring them that the filing would not affect their phone service. San Diego-based Leap Wireless International Inc., has been negotiating with its major creditors during the past month and is close to reaching an agreement to restructure its debt while staying in business. As part of this, Leap filed for Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of California in San Diego.
