The proposed state Department of Natural Resources budget is targeting the harmful plants, aquatic creatures and insects that are increasingly invading Wisconsin.
But the $2.6 million that would be spent during the next two fiscal years to slow the spread of invasive species on the state's lands and waters would come at the cost of a $2 million cut in grants for boat ramps and landings used by recreational boaters.
"It is a shift in priorities," said DNR budget chief Joe Polasek. "A big part of it is that the lakes people are concerned about the spread of the rusty crayfish and the watermilfoil."
