NEW YORK -- Longer lengths, men's wear-inspired coatdresses and shirtdresses and a renewed interest in silk are putting a spark in fall dress bookings.

Better- and bridge-priced manufacturers say the strong consumer acceptance of dresses this spring should continue next fall, based on strong early bookings generated by last month's market. They say women continue to count on dresses for good value and an easy way of dressing.

Makers project increases at 10 to 50 percent over 1991, a strong period that would have been stronger were it not for the recession.
