Krispy Kreme Doughnuts' profits halved in Q2. Its six month net income dropped 171% from last year to a loss of $18.7m (10.4m [pounds sterling]), its first since going public in 2000. It's also suffering from the departure of its COO and an accounting probe.

Krispy Kreme cites the low-carb diet craze as one reason, but similar brands have not been hit and Dunkin' Donuts and International Dairy Queen have more than double Krispy Kreme's per-capita revenue in the US. It's introducing frozen drinks, coffee beans and mini and sugar-free doughnuts to its range, as well as continuing its expansion overseas.
