Feb. 4--About 20 Thai brands of leather goods, including bags and shoes, will be promoted at major department stores in Asia, Europe and the Middle East this year as part of an export campaign.

Announcing the plan, Yingkiat Liu, president of the Thai Leather Goods Association, said Singapore, the Philippines, Dubai and Saudi Arabia were among key markets.

Selected brands were all mid-range or upmarket to avoid competition from cheap products made in China, he said.

Although Thailand last year exported leather products worth 75 billion baht, the industry had to overcome design and marketing problems.
