Sep. 24--SMITHFIELD, N.C. -- Twenty-five years ago, Pearl Chandler knew everyone on Forbes Drive and Bingham Street by name. She'd fuss at the neighborhood kids if she saw them misbehave; they all called her "Mee-maw."
These days, some neighborhood kids still wander over to Chandler's house after school for a Popsicle, and they still call her "Mee-maw." But she doesn't know their parents and can't guess how long they will be around.
