Switzerland's pharmaceutical industry is breathing a sigh of relief, in the wake of a national vote on new measures to restrict animal testing. After a fiercely-fought campaign, voters defeated a proposition that could have led to a ban on all animal testing.
A victory for Swiss Animal Protection, the group which initiated the proposal, could well have forced companies like Roche, Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz to move their R&D operations abroad. Some 13,000 jobs in Switzerland are linked to research that would have been affected by the law.
