Sep. 16--WASHINGTON--In what amounts to a national act of apology for mistreated peoples, Native Americans are getting their place among the shrines of American nationhood with the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian on the capital Mall.
A major theme of the new museum, which opens Tuesday, is the survival of Native Americans against often desperate odds, as exemplified by Gen. Philip Sheridan's remark, "The only good Indian is a dead Indian."
