1. San Jose Sharks

A GREAT YEAR ENDED UNHAPPILY for the San Jose Sharks, who had the look of a champion until the Calgary Flames shut them down in the Western Conference final.

But the Sharks figure to learn from their disappointment and could be the NHL's premier team this season.

The unrelated duo of GM Doug Wilson and coach Ron Wilson have improved on the work of previous coach-GM Darryl Sutter--who led the Flames over the Sharks last spring. They put together a balanced roster of scorers, checkers and hitters. There are grinders and finesse players, speedsters and boomers.
