Cottage cheese sales have been giving the dairy foods business the blues for a long time. They are headed straight south as per capita consumption continues to drop. But the decline can be reversed.
The category is in deep trouble for two reasons: (1) manufacturers and (2) consumers. Both have changed, and they seem to be headed in opposing directions.
Thirty years ago, cottage cheese was the diet food of choice. It was a substitute for starches like potatoes, an alternative to leafy salads, a main course at noon, even dessert in some households. It was ever present on restaurant menus and in every mom's refrigerator. It was good stuff.
