SHOPPERS paying a premium for the leanest minced meat could be filling up on fat.

Packs of lean and extra lean minced beef, lamb or chicken can contain more fat than the cheaper standard versions, a food watchdog claims.

Supermarkets have been found selling minced meat with far higher fat contents than claimed on the label.

The Food Standards Agency wants stores to improve quality control and is threatening legal action against the worst offenders.

It found packs of standard mince ranged from 1.9 to 32.3 per cent fat.
