Sep. 29--MEXICO, N.Y. -- For 12 years, Michael C. Gault has brought his students from the FFA club at Edwards-Knox Central School to Behling Orchards here.
The daylong trip is a fund-raiser for the club. The youths take advance orders for the apples and then make the two-hour trip from southern St. Lawrence County to pick them.
And pick they do.
On Saturday, after leaving at 7 a.m. with two buses -- one for the students and one for the apples -- they returned home after dinner with 150 bushels, or more than 3 tons, of what officials and local orchard owners are calling one of the state's best-ever apple crops in ...
