THE WORDS "VALUES" AND "AMERICAN VALUES" have been nearly ubiquitous in presidential election coverage on television and radio, in the print media, and on the Internet. But, as teachers, we know that it's a touchy topic to cover in the classroom. Trying to find the right approach to teach about values is difficult at any time; and, in a presidential election year, some teachers would just as soon avoid the controversy that might ensue from heated arguments in the classroom and, even more frightening, among parents who might learn about the discussions from the students.
