The local SOUTHERN PERU COPPER CO. (SPCC), a subsidiary of GRUPO MEXICO of Mexico, recently awarded a sulfuric acid plant construction contract to Canada-based KVAERNER CHEMETICS INC. The planned facility is intended to enable the capture of off-gases coming from SPCC's smelter located at Ilo, Peru.

Construction plans call for building a plant with an installed production capacity of 3,760 metric tons per day.
