Wars, it is said, never solve anything. For in the end, after terrible loss of life, enormous bloodshed and crippling costs, it all comes down to negotiation and discussion in the end.
It is an argument which Tony Blair has heard frequently lately - and which he is certain to face again and again in the run-up to the forthcoming General Election.
That, of course, is about Iraq in 2004 but I wonder whether there is a far more significant lesson to be learned from a battle which was fought much nearer home, albeit much longer ...
