In the nineteenth, the pages of the Ldies Home Journal instructed early American women how to dress, while the men took their fashion cues from the newspaper photos of the Royals abroad, the presidents and political leaders at home and the cahracters that were described in the literature of the day.
A nineteenth century young man also picked up fashion tips from his 'grand tours' abroad that were supposed to exposed the lad to culture, rounding out the character, smoothing off the rough edges. Once he returned from his travels, he would emulater the looks he had seen on the other side.
