Wearing his squeaky new leather jacket, Kenny Smith started his first day as a Minneapolis police officer with a quick introduction to the job from his partner at Lake St. and Nicollet Av. S. He was told what beats they would be walking, followed by a "see 'ya at the end of your shift."
No portable radios. No computers in the squad. Four weeks of training after the department accepted his application.
