The manufacturer of the popular pain medicine Vioxx withdrew it from the market Thursday, but many doctors said they've avoided the drug for some time because of growing concern about its safety.
The heavily advertised drug, which is taken by an estimated 2 million people worldwide, was withdrawn by Merck & Co. after a study showed that Vioxx doubled the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Dr. Todd Hess, a pain specialist at United Hospital in St. Paul, said he wasn't surprised. He said the evidence of the drug's dangers has been building for some time.
