Oct. 5--LAKE FOREST, Calif. -- Western Digital Corp. on Monday launched a version of its popular hard drives that are small enough to fit in laptop computers, cheering its fans and plunging it into battle with formidable new competitors.
The Lake Forest company, the third-largest hard-drive supplier in the world, unveiled its WD Scorpio drive in a move to gain sales in the fast-growing laptop market. While laptops account for just a fourth of computer sales, the figure is growing at twice the rate of cheaper desktops.
