This article explores economic, social and political relations in the Brazilian northeastern province of Pernambuco during the 1840s. The onset of Liberal rule in the country and in the province in 1843 resulted in massive dismissals of civil servants from the previous Conservative government, who were replaced by members of the Praia faction of the provincial Liberal Party. In addition to advocating reforms to the system of land monopolies held by coastal planter elites and their families, the Praia embarked on social programmes to distribute to the skilled and unskilled unemployed inhabitants of the province jobs that were controlled by Portuguese tradesmen and traders. ...
