I was told that new carpet can harm, even kill, my pet birds. Is that true?

Birds are very sensitive to fumes. That's why they were carried down into mines; they're early warning sentries of unhealthy air.

The Carpet and Rug Institute in Washington, D.C., recommends removing exotic birds from newly carpeted areas until the smell is gone. Generally, that means ventilating the carpet for 48 to 72 hours.

Other indoor fumes can harm birds, too.
