In one of the most high-profile drug recalls in recent history, the makers of the blockbuster arth-ritis drug Vioxx pulled it from the market Thursday after a study found it doubled the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Currently, about 2 million people worldwide use Vioxx, and 84 million have taken it since it arrived on the market in 1999 with great fanfare.
Vioxx has since become one of the world's most aggressively marketed drugs, advertised in magazines and in TV commercials, with celebrity endorsements from former Olympic athletes Dorothy Hamill and Bruce Jenner.
