Oct. 3--Michael Pettyjohn and Lisa Eastland are quick to respond when asked whether they're financially better off now than they were four years ago.

Pettyjohn was making $38,000 a year, plus bonuses, as a process-engineering technician at Parker-Chomerics in Hudson just three years ago.

Then he was laid off, leaving him to take a $10-an-hour window-making job at Harvey Industries.

Today, the 58 year old can no longer work after an injury he sustained at that job. He now gets workers' compensation.
