BOSTON -- New England Council President James Brett is calling on Congress to immediately fund this year's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) in light of predictions by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) that heating costs for homeowners are expected to increase 28 percent this season.
In its winter fuel outlook report, the EIA noted that heating oil prices are expected to average 29 percent higher compared with last winter and homeowners' bills will likely rise about 28 percent. This will bring the average energy bill for oil-heated homes to $1,223, up $270 on average per household.
