Student self-beliefs are significantly related to a number of academic outcomes. This study was designed to examine the relationship between self-beliefs and reading achievement of elementary-school students from cross-cultural contexts. Students included in these analyses were from the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) 2001 International Samples (fourth-graders) from Hong Kong and the United States. Several self-belief variables were examined and variance estimation procedures for complex sampling designs were employed.
