Delegates at Chemical Week's annual conference on the chemical industry of Central and Eastern Europe, held recently in Warsaw, witnessed interesting debate on the opportunities and frustrations of operating in a region shot through with social and economic change. Speaking as a potential Western investor, Marc Schriber, director/Eastern Europe for Du Pont Europe (Geneva), appealed governments to set up development boards similar to the Treuhandanstalt of Germany. That would simplify procedures for Western companies negotiating with numerous and constantly changing agencies within the new regimes, he says.
