Japanese LNG shippers are headed West.
With liquefaction trains springing up everywhere from Egypt to Equatorial Guinea and from Nigeria to Norway, and with receiving terminals mushrooming on both sides of the ocean, the Atlantic Basin should be awash with LNG tankers in the coming decade.
Among those set to profit most are Japanese shipping powerhouses Mitsui O.S.K. Line (MOL), Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K-Line) and Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK)--known in the trade as the Big Three. These companies have labored to secure their position over the past few years, under the theory that already mature Asian markets would not provide much future growth.
