USC coach Pete Carroll enjoys almost rock-star status in the Pacific- 10 Conference, the result of a national championship, two conference titles, a 13-game winning streak and a No. 1 ranking.
But this week, Carroll meets the one guy nipping at his heels, the coach who has proven he can match Carroll in X's and O's, and perhaps more annoyingly, gets mentioned for NFL jobs just as frequently.
If it weren't for California coach Jeff Tedford, Carroll would be just about perfect the past two years.
